THE run-up to Christmas is a key period for charity fundraising, but it can be difficult to grab shoppers’ attention and make yourself seen and heard among all the festive fashion and gifting on the High Street. So two Yorkshire charities, Age UK York and Yorkshire Cancer Research, have been stepping out and shining bright to show us all that their stores offer brilliant options at budget prices, and allow shoppers to enter the spirit of Christmas by being kind to the environment and supporting their vital work.
Age UK York is raising funds for its winter campaign, called Stamp Out Loneliness, highlighting the need to support older people during the festive and winter seasons, when many can feel lonely and isolated. All profits from the shops allow the charity to continue essential services including the advice line, dementia clubs and help after hospital stays.
Susie Gray, Age UK York retail manager, says: “So often, people may wear their festive outfit once, then discard or never wear again. By purchasing an outfit from one of our shops, this is not only beneficial for the environment but also raises much-needed funds for older people who are facing poverty and having to choose between their heating or eating.”
Model and campaigner Annie Stirk, who lives near York, took part in a fashion shoot at The Ivy York to help promote the festive fashion offer at Age UK York’s four charity shops – at Fossgate, Bishopthorpe Road, Burton Stone Lane and Haxby.
“You can find beautiful, high-quality pieces that feel unique, and you’re supporting vital community work at the same time,” she says.
“As a Classic Silver model, I love showing that style doesn’t fade, it evolves. Charity shop fashion is perfect for expressing personality at any age.
“You can find one-off pieces that you won’t see anywhere else, perfect for festive outfits with personality,” she says. “It’s sustainable and budget-friendly, especially when we’re all trying to spend a little more mindfully.
“You are supporting vital local charities at a time of year when they really need it most.”
Annie’s top charity shop tips for festive fashion and gifting are:
“Look for quality fabrics and designer labels – wool, silk, cashmere and good-quality cotton blends often turn up in charity shops, especially after wardrobe clear-outs.
“Get to know your local charity shops and keep an eye on those special finds. Check the rails often – stock changes daily, and the magic is in the hunt.
“Think beyond clothing – scarves, handbags, jewellery and even toys make wonderful, affordable gifts. Try everything on – sizing varies widely, and pre-loved sizing can vary.
“Embrace creativity – mix vintage with high street, add a belt, or style it your own way to give pieces a fresh lease of life.”
